The Mawei Shipyard, founded in 1866, is a key historical site in China, marking the birth of the modern navy and advancements in education and technology. It was the first mechanical shipyard in China and played a crucial role in military and industrial development. Today, it stands as a cultural heritage site, with conservation efforts initiated in 2019.
As an architect involved in the master planning and architectural design, I contributed to preserving the site’s historical significance while integrating modern elements. My role focused on developing the planning strategy to reorganize the shipyard’s fragmented spaces. I helped create a spatial structure with “one axis, three belts, four levels, and four nodes,” ensuring the preservation of the site's landscape and skyline. This work involved designing various buildings and ensuring their integration into the broader master plan, balancing historical context with contemporary design needs.
